“Erzgebirge wood art has a long tradition and has been produced in the Erzgebirge region for centuries. High-quality woods such as spruce, pine or maple are used, which are elaborately handcrafted into a wide variety of figures and motifs.
The most famous figures are probably the smokers, nutcrackers, angels and miners as well as the nativity figures and Christmas pyramids.
Smoking men were originally used as part of an ancient custom. Resin and herbs were burned to drive away evil spirits. Today smokers are used as decoration. They are filled with fragrant incense. This spreads a pleasant smell in the room.
The smoker and his function
The magic of the incense man is his ability to smoke the smoke from Erzgebirge incense cones. To make this happen, here are instructions:
The smoker consists of two parts. In order to be able to insert the incense candle or incense cone, the upper part of the incense man is removed.
A holder for the incense candle is attached to the base, i.e. the lower part of the incense man. It is often a metal plate or a plate with clips bent upwards. The incense cone is placed on this, always with the tip upwards.
Beforehand, the incense candle is made to glow with a match and placed in the holder. Please be careful! Risk of burns.
The body of the incense figure, i.e. the upper part, is then placed back on the base. You should be careful here, otherwise the smoldering incense candle could tip over. After a short wait, the smoker begins to smoke.
This creates a wonderful scent that immediately reminds you of Christmas, cosiness and home.”
